Author Patty O’Brien examines colonial culture, female primitivism, and the evolution of the stereotype from antiquity to modern day Hollywood, to show the significance of these representations of women across great distances and periods of time. The book includes 37 illustrations of Pacific women from early etchings by shipboard artists to recent photographs.
