PASSPORT DC

This year the Embassy of Australia joins the local diplomatic community in participating in the "Around the World Open House", presented by Passport DC.  On Saturday, 17 May between 11am and 3pm, under the stars of the Southern sky, take in performances of indigenous Australian music and view exhibits on studying and working in Australia.  Also visit the embassy’s gallery currently featuring a photographic exhibition 1918 Australia and America: Allies on the Western Front from the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.

Admission is free but photo identification is essential to enter this event.

Passport DC is presented by Cultural Tourism DC, a nonprofit organisation that helps Metro area residents and visitors experience Washington’s authentic arts and heritage:

May 3 – 17, Passport DC will open doors to one of Washington’s most distinctive assets – its diplomatic community. From Iraq and Ethiopia to Slovenia and Argentina, more than 55 embassies and 15 cultural centers open their doors to showcase authentic music, dance, film, crafts, and cuisine. Discover one of Washington’s most distinctive assets and travel the world without leaving DC!

The complete schedule of events is available at www.PassportDC.org.  Almost all the events are free, but some do require reservations.

Antipodes : Contemporary Australian Performance Art and Music Videos - Screening May 9 & 11, 2008 - AREA 405, Baltimore, USA - www.area405.com/antipodes/

Antipodes features contemporary Australian performance art and music videos. Timothy Nohe curated the screening to introduce audiences in Baltimore to the rich scope of work produced by Australian performance art and music communities.

The term “Antipodes” may be defined as “any two places or regions that are on diametrically opposite sides of the earth,” and in fact over 9,700 miles separate Baltimore from Sydney. However, there are many commonalities shared between the Australian and American artists, and the screening bridges the distance quicker than the 24-hour flight to the Land Down Under.

The screening presents works by the Shangrila-La Collective organized by Maria Cruz for Artspace Visual Arts Centre, Sydney; and individual works by Lisa Anderson, Lisa Andrew, Daniel Blinkhorn, Warren Burt, Catherine Fargher, Derek Kreckler, Maria Miranda and Norie Neumark, Eugenia Raskopoulos, Jacky Redgate, and Justene Williams.
